A secret bar in Madrid that you need to know

When the lights of the wonderful décor shop Kikekeller are turned off, others are turned on – those of their secret bar where one can get lost in for an entire night.

When you’re strolling through Malasaña you’ll come across plenty of cool places, but none like Kikekeller. Located in the heart of Madrid’s hippest neighbourhood, Kikekeller is possibly the most peculiar bar in the city. A designer furniture store which doubles up as a clandestine bar.

One delightful by-product of Spain’s economic woes a few years ago was a clever fusion of art, retail, and hospitality. The personal project of its owners Kike and Celia, the result is a store-gallery-bar to enjoy craft beers and crisp gin and tonics whilst admiring the bi-monthly art exhibitions. Beautiful design pieces and prototypes on which you sit are exhibited alike. Everything here is for sale.

After you’ve marvelled at the gorgeous welded-steel furniture such as roller-skate magazine racks, witty teapots and eclectic lamps, you can discuss it all with your friends in one of the different rooms or even in the secluded inner courtyard. Just make sure that your mates are as hip as the surroundings.

Giving the venue an almost secretive speakeasy feel, the décor shop at the front of the building closes earlier than the bar, which is open until 21:00 Monday – Wednesday and 02:30 Thursday – Saturday. Closed on Sundays.

Kikekeller was a pioneer of the trend and his bar remains a popular spot where the city’s most modern and hip meet for a few drinks before starting the night in Malasaña.
