Nimbin – Australia’s Alternative Capital

Nestled in rural New South Wales, Nimbin was transformed into the Australia‘s answer to Woodstock in 1973 for their Aquarius Festival. Many of the hippie communes that were established in the early seventies are still set up today.

Once a forgotten little dairying village, Nimbin was changed forever in May 1973. Thousands of counter-culture kids and back-to-earth-movement types headed to Nimbin for the Aquarius Festival. Many stayed on and created new communities in the beautiful countryside around the town, hoping to continue the ideals expressed during the 10-day celebration. The new settlers of the 1970s, the hippies, set up environmentally friendly businesses, cottage arts and crafts and introduced alternative living, including communes.

Surrounded by an impossibly pretty valley and areas significant to the local Aboriginal tribes, Nimbin has a “loose” policy on cannabis use, hosting the yearly Mardi Grass festival and welcoming visitors to the Hemp Embassy. While drug use is still illegal, it’s not uncommon to see locals offering to sell visitors controlled substances in the pure form or in baked goods.

Today, Nimbin is Australia’s alternative capital and is a sister city to Woodstock, USA, and Freetown Christiana, Denmark. The town is very much open for tourism, especially eco-tourism, and has some shops, cafes and venues that play off the alternative, hippie image. The best way to soak up the atmosphere is to take a stroll along Cullen St.

With an amazing array of cafés and shops, the town also features fascinating places like Djanbung Permaculture Gardens, Rainbow Power Company and the extraordinary Nimbin Candle Factory. The psychedelic shopfront murals of the rainbow-serpent dreaming and marijuana bliss create the perfect backdrop for the daily show of unscripted theatre and are sure to enhance your travel experience.

Surrounded by three World Heritage Listed rainforests, including Protester Falls, Nimbin is also a fabulous place to rest a while, to relax, rejuvenate and let Mother Nature work her charms. You can stay in luxurious cabins on the edge of the rainforest, in a B&B or backpackers, or perhaps in a teepee with mountain view.
