Located close to the Southern tip of the Island of Sri Lanka, Mirissa Beach is the place to sit back, relax and forget about all the hussle and bussle of your life. Read on to find out what the top things to do in Mirissa Beach are.

This secluded crescent shaped beach, only about 200 km from the Equator, boasts some of Sri Lanka’s most stunning sunsets. Every now and again the silence is broken by the sound of a coconut falling on the sand or a chilled beer being opened by someone further up the beach. Read on to find out the top things to do in Mirissa Beach.

Whale Watching

Mirissa is a great place to go whale watching. There are many tour companies that offer whale and dolphin watching tours and if you are lucky you can get to see many different types. Blue whales, Bryde’s whales, Sperm whales, Fin whales and Orca have all been spotted off Mirissa. Sometimes you can even see turtles and various fish species such as Bluefin tuna and flying fish. The best time for whale watching should be from the end of October until April.

Watch Sunsets from the rock overlooking Mirissa Beach

Climbing Parrot Rock was one of my favourite things to do in Mirissa beach. Parrot Rock is the little mound you can see overlooking Mirissa Beach. There’s a sign that says private property, but I was told by locals I could just ignore that. It’s a really nice thing to either do around sunrise or sunset to watch the activity starting or wrapping up on the beach.

Surfing Whole day

Mirissa Beach is rapidly becoming a popular surfer hangout during the months of October to April when it’s the rainy season on the East coast of Sri Lanka. The waves are great and since there’s just little crowd, surfers really love being here. There are many surf schools and camps spread all over the town such as Surf&Yoga Mirissa.

Secret beach Mirissa

Secret beach Mirissa is a very small beach divided in two beach strips with coarse coral sand, some 100 meters wide each. They are both very, very pretty and it feels very exclusive even though there is a small restaurant there. It is, nonetheless, an incredible beach well worth a visit if you are in Mirissa and feel like getting away from the tourist masses.

Snorkel Turtle Bay

One of the top things to do in Mirissa Beach is snorkelling with sea turtles. If you are blessed with good weather and a low-tide, head down to Turtle Bay. If you arrive early in the morning you might be lucky enough to snorkel with wild turtles. Turtle Bay is only swimmable in low tide as the ocean completely swallows the sand at high tide. Fingers crossed Turtle Bay lives up to its name for you!

Meditate by the Buddisth Temples

Rukshan Yoga offers wonderful holistic yoga meditation drop-in classes at the beautiful hill-top temple in Mirissa. Dive deep into the holistic yoga, breathing and meditation practice mediated by the Yogi Master, Guru Chanaka Rukshan. There are other great yoga schools that will take you to tranquil spots by the temples in order to get a great environment to meditate.
