Top 5 best beaches in Formentera

The Balearic island of Formentera is Ibiza‘s chilled-out little sister, beloved for its idyllic beaches and off-grid hippy vibe. Continue reading to discover the top 5 best beaches in Formentera

The island of Formentera, the smallest and least developed of the main Balearic Islands, has fine beaches, great walking, and cycling trails, as well as secluded coves and traditional fishing villages. With neither an airport nor a dock for cruise ships, the wishbone-shaped island is everything that Ibiza is not. This picturesque Mediterranean island, popular among nudists and back-to-nature types, has none of Ibiza’s disco frenzy, nothing like its excesses of construction and debauchery.

Here, the top 5 best beaches in Formentera.

Ses Illetes

The most famous beach in Formentera is Ses Illetes which is considered among the most beautiful beaches in the world. It’s a 1.5 km long beach, located north of the island within the Natural Park of Ses Salines. The color of the water seems to be a mixture of clear turquoise hues because of the great forest of Posidonia seabed. The beach is very popular in summer, but since it’s very long, if you are patient to walk far enough from the parking, you can have a bath without too many people around.

Caló des Mort

This secluded cove is found in the South of the island, and it is part of the Migjorn Bay. Caló des Mort is very small, and there’s only a tiny beach there, but it’s considered as one of the most precious beaches in Formentera. As it’s quite small and fairly popular, it can get very crowded in summer, so get there early if you want space for your towel. The best moment to enjoy this nearly virgin cove is early in the morning or just before sunset, when most people have already left. The cove is also perfect for snorkeling, since you will find a lot of colorful fish between the rocks underwater. There are no bars and restaurants here, hence you’d rather bring some food and water with yourself for the day.

Migjorn beach

The Playa Migjorn is the longest beach on the island, but it does not get overcrowded, even in summer. Located on the Southern coast of Formentera, it’s the favorite beach of locals, since you can always find quiet spots. Migjorn is surrounded by giant sand dunes, pine trees, and seaside bars and restaurants to enjoy the breeze of the sea with a cocktail in your hand. Apart from taking a bath and enjoying relaxing moments on the sand, Migjorn Beach is also a great place to do sport on the long wooden walkway that was built there.

Sa Roqueta Beach

Just 2 km north of the centre of Es Pujols you will find the road to Playa Sa Roqueta, a little bay which will exceed your expectations. Probably the most intimate cove in Formentera, the beach is very popular with nudists who love secluded spots. It’s also a good place for snorkeling due to its crystaline waters. This small bay it’s composed by a mix of sand and stones areas, it’s not as attractive as other beaches in Formentera, but it stands out because of to the serenity and calm.

Cala Saona

Situated on the west coast of Formentera, Cala Saona is a picture perfect beach that also boasts the most stunning sunset views on the island. The sandy, shallow shores and crystalline turquoise water of Cala Saona make the cove a favourite with families. Fringed with pine trees, flanked by low red cliffs, and with a row of quaint wooden boat houses, Cala Saona not short on character, and the calm sea conditions are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. A chiringuito beach bar provides refreshments, though a nearby hotel means the cove can fill up quickly.
