Located on a stunning bay on the coast of Montenegro, Kotor is a city steeped in tradition and history, with remarkable scenic views. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the old town was built between the 12th and 14th centuries and is filled with medieval architecture, narrow streets and historic monuments. It’s a dramatic and delightful place where the past coexists with the present.

Walk the Old Town of Kotor

The Old City is one of the highlights of Kotor. It’s so easy to spend hours wandering through the cobblestone streets admiring architecture of the buildings or stopping into one of the many cafes, restaurants, or shops. Churches, cathedrals, palaces, squares, markets and museums are spread all over the old town.

Dinne at Galion restaurant

Fabulous Galion restaurant has been around for decades. It’s terrace, located on a watefront platform just outside of the old town of Kotor overlooking the port, has been the stage for many romantic dinners over the years. Fresh fish is the focus, but you’ll also find steaks and pasta. Gallion usually closes in winter time.

Go to the beach

There are some croncete beaches in Kotor bay, mostly in front of hotels. However, the number of sandy beaches in Kotor is almost led down to a minimum and water is not of premium quality for swimming. Consider driving to the beautiful Jaz or Trsteno beaches on the Budva Riviera, some 20km from Kotor.

Climb the city walls of Kotor

An absolute “must” while visiting Kotor. Dramatic and magnificent views of the old town and the bay are the major rewards of this hiking tour. Well worth the physical effort involved. To reach the San Giovanni fortress, one should begin the hike outside the walls on the Old Centinje Caravan Road

Visit the nearby islands

The appealing attraction of Kotor Bay are the two islands with churches built on them. One is a natural island, St George, and smaller in size. This one has a very old church, with elements from the 9th century, built by the Benedictine monks. The island was also used as a cemetery for a while. The other one, named Our Lady of The Rock, is an artificial island built with rock on a pier and a blue dome church on it.
